Here are the 5 songs you need to hear this week.
The Lumineers, “Ophelia”
RIYL: Band of Horses, Iron & Wine, some Bruce Springsteen
After making us all go “Ho Hey!” until we went funny in the head, the Denver bunch is going to try and make lightning strike twice with the Difficult Second Album™ on April 8. The last record had three major singles. Will this be the first from Cleopatra?
RIYL: Dear Rouge, Grimes, some Lorde
Dark (well, sometimes) synth pop that has broken through with more than 200,000 listens on Spotify. Shows scheduled for Ontario in March.
Gore (Warner Brothers)
Their eight studio album is set for April 8 and will be accompanied by the now-standard 180-gram vinyl release limited to 3500 copies. Nothing like an instant collectors’ item, right? This first single has already had nearly 500,000 listens on Spotify.
RIYL: Japandroids, Replacements, Jawbreaker
After a well-reviewed first album in 2013, Toronto’s PUP (ALL CAPS, please) returns with a love/hate song about the Don Valley Parkway. (Note to non-Toronto people: This is one of the most congested freeways on the continent. If you had to drive it regularly, you’d be this mad, too.)
The 1975, “The Sound”
I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It (Interscope)
RIYL: Alt-J, INXS, Rolling Stones
I saw these guys in Singapore at the Laneway Festival last month. A week later, they were with Larry David on Saturday Night Live. They could be one of the anointed bands for 2016. Interesting that they won the NME award for “Worst Band” two years ago.
