BAD IDEA –
Thinking that this race discussion about the Oscars is the last discussion like this we’re gonna have. It isn’t, and it shouldn’t be.
Louis CK said it best, “If you’re white and you don’t admit that it’s great, you’re an asshole.” We have it so good and we refuse to admit it. Right now, after hearing me say that, people get upset. White people don’t like hearing they have it good, cause it implies there’s been no struggle in our lives. That’s it right there.
I hate it when someone says I have it easy, cause I know people who have had it way easier, so I immediately go. “No. I had it hard, man. I worked my ass of to have what I have. Don’t diminish my struggle.”
But that’s not what people are saying when they talk about white privilege or the OscarsSoWhite hashtag that went around. Some might be, but they’re missing the point. It’s about just recognizing the conciously or not there is a vast divide in the world we live in. I paid my dues in small town radio for the first few years of my career and I know that a lot of those redneck dick bags would have treated me very different if I wasn’t a white guy. So I have to recognize that were I a different race I might not have made it to where I am.
That’s the point. And if you can honestly say your skin colour hasn’t affected the path your life is taking, you’re lying to yourself. That’s the discussion people are trying to have, but as long as everyone keeps being defensive it isn’t gonna change.
