Cheering for Ted Komiskey. He’s the mayor of Ingersol Ontario, and he’s a hero, a modern day David to Toronto’s Goliath. Why? He told Toronto, us, the centre of the universe, the epicentre of Canadian culture to shove it. Why, cause Toronto wants to build a dump in his town in an old quarry. But Ted says no way, he says we should keep our garbage in our city … and he’s right.
Remember what you’d do when you were a kid and your parents asked you to clean your room? You shoved everything under your bed. And then your folks wouild come in and just look under the bed, and say. this isn’t working. Clean it PROPERLY.
As a kid that was a confusing concept because the room LOOKED clean, so what was the problem?
Now that you’re an adult you know the problem, you didn’t clean anything, you just put off the problem for another day. That’s what dumps are. There’s no solving of any problems, you’re just hiding your problems and pretending they go away. We don’t realize how much garbage we make cause we never have to deal with it. If we couldn’t just ship our garbage off, and had to do something with it, we;d realize how much garbage we actually make.
We’d change the way we consume things, we’d demand better recycling programs and facilities. We’d demand that all packaging on products is made from easily recyclable materials. We’d demand accountability, because we would NEED it.
But that won’t happen. You know what we’ll do instead? We’ll either offer Ted Komiskey more money to build the dump in his town … or just find another place. Cause we’d rather pay money out than be accountable for our messes, cause accountability is just something we tell our kids to have.
