BAD IDEA –
Punishing people who don’t have options. The city is looking at implementing tolls on the Gardiner and DVP. It’s a pretty smart move. The city needs money, tolls will give them that money. So it’s a pretty common sense move.
We have too many cars on the road and inevitably this will get more people to rethink how they get to work, maybe they’re gonna start carpooling. There’s loads of side benefits to this. Hopefully people will rely more on mass transit like the TTC and the Go Train.
But there are people who don’t have that option, and a blanket toll is a real pain in the ass for some. I drive into work at 4am. I do it Monday to Friday. I’m not alone there’s loads of cars on the DVP and 401 and Gardiner at that time of day. Do I want to drive? No. I’d rather take the Go. Cause its efficient and economical. But I can’t, no one who works those early morning hours can. I can list three other people on my street in the same boat.
So because no other options are being given they’re just gonna have to pay an additional tax? That’s stupid. The frustrating thing is, I still agree with tolls. How can you not, we NEED to reduce the number of cars out there. But you need to wonder if the end game is to do something good for the city, to curb unneeded commuter traffic or is it just to get more money for a city that can’t get its finances in order.
