Eddie Vedder’s biggest solo single has to be “Hard Sun” from the Into the Wild soundtrack, especially in Canada.
What you may not know is that the song was written by a Canadian. His name is Gordon Peterson, who went by the name Indio and who was originally from Dundas, Ontario.
“Hard Sun” was a single from a long-lost 1989 album on the A&M label called Big Harvest that was out of print for years. It was impossible to find. So how did Eddie come to record it?
Sean Penn, the director of Into the Wild is the guy who found the song…somehow. We’re still not really clear on that. The original version was in the movie, but after a night of drinking wine, Sean told Eddie (who really liked the song) that he should do his own version, but he had to keep it faithful to the original.
So he did—and it became a hit.
