GOOD IDEA –
Knowing that sexual assault is unlike any other crime. It is. And that’s why the legal system fails victims of sexual assault time and time again.
Over the weekend, I–like you–wound up in dozens of conversations about sexual assault. And the shocker … I know A LOT of women who’ve been sexually assaulted. A staggering amount, and for the record ONE should be a staggering amount, but sadly I know a lot more than one. And the thing that blew me away was, none of them reported it. They didn’t want to go through the hassle of having their character called into question.
One of them actually worked with her attacker directly for months until she could afford to move to another city. See, she works in the entertainment industry and was worried that if she made trouble for this guy she’d find herself losing out on gigs, and therefore unable to make money.
She even went on a comedy tour with this guy less than a month later, because she needed to make money. Cause she like all other humans has bills to pay.
Then I asked her if she went to the police and she started laughing, like one of those cynical “you idiot” kind of laughs. And she said that cause she went on tour with the guy they would take that as a sign that she didn’t feel threatened and the guy would get off, painting her as a liar and get her blacklisted from a lot of potential work on the comedy circuit.
That’s it right there. That’s the system we have. And it’s wrong.
