There’s SOOOO MUCH to talk about when it comes to ‘Batman v Superman: The Dawn of Justice’ so lets do it in 2 parts.. this first part spoiler free.. just should you see the movie or not type thing.. the second part, and I’ll give you plenty of warning will be for people who have already seen the flick and we’ll get into the spoilery stuff.. ok? Lets do this..
Up first Non-Spoiler review..
Right out of the gate I’m just going to say it.. I liked this movie. Maybe even liked it A LOT. But I had to see it twice..
After seeing it the first time (Friday Afternoon) my review went as follows..
Woof. That’s all I could say. Woof. It’s clunky, they jammed way too much story into one movie, they crushed together 2 major DC comic story-lines into 1 giant mess of a movie. But then I got to thinking.. Did I really think that? Or did I read that all over the internet this past week and went into the movie wanting to pick it apart, wanting to find it’s flaws, and believe me it has lots. Did I go in letting the cynicism of the internet tarnish my movie going experience? And more than that had I properly prepared myself for the film I was about to see? After I watched some of my favourite video podcasters on youtube break the flick down I decided I needed to see it again. So Sunday night I ventured out to the movies once again, and this time around I did my best to watch it through my own eyes, not letting the outside noise distort my opinion, after doing that I realized, its a good, borderline great comic book flick.
Wonder Woman is AWESOME, she steals the show whenever she’s on screen and there’s a scene where she has this little smirk on her face during the climax that is just perfect.
Pissed off Battfleck? Loved him. Even the first time seeing the movie the casting was not the issue.. Affleck, just as I always said he would, KILLED IT!
Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luther was a cool, fun, interesting take on the character that I really dug.
Superman, Cavill nails it.. he is Superman.
This is for sure a movie you should see. Its full of action and lays a solid base for the rest of the Justice League Universe. It is for sure aimed at DC Comic super-fans and not as much the masses. Sort of the opposite of Marvel movies, that are for everyone sometimes at the expense of the super-fans. Having said that, is it the best Superhero movie you’ll see? No. But it’s worth your time.
NON-SPOILER SECTION OVER!!!!
We’re going to move on to the discussion of the movie section now, I invite you to keep reading if you have already seen the movie, if you haven’t here’s where you get off. Have a great day!
If you’re still with me you’ve seen the movie and are ready to dive into stuff deeper so let’s make it happen..
Here is the easiest way to make it all make sense and really like this movie.. Darkseid is behind it all. This movie is like looking through a keyhole and seeing 2 and 1/2 hours of cool, fun, enjoyable stuff but I think once that door is fully open with the Justice League movies we’re going to say ‘HOLY CRAP these movies are amazing’!
First things first, who is Darkseid..
Ya.. he’s no joke.
Back to this movie.. We have to get into the stuff with The Flash – Bruce, while waiting for the files to decrypt, has that ‘nightmare’ that I think is actually a vision of the future (some of which you can see in the clip above) because at that time he 1. didn’t know what kryptonite looked like, he knew it existed but not that it was green. 2. We see the Omega symbol of Darkseid in the wasteland between Bats and the fallen city and 3. The flying militia are Parademons, the henchmen of Darkseid. When Bruce wakes up there is The Flash to warn him from the future to protect Lois Lane.. ‘You were right about him, you were always right about him. Lois is the key, Lois Lane’ In Batman‘s vision Superman blamed Bats for Lois Lane‘s death before ripping out his heart; clearly The Flash was talking about Superman joining Darkseid’s army because he felt betrayed by Batman. Never in this movie is Lois in a situation where Batman needed to save her which means, again this all about a much bigger universe. I think stuff like that is brilliant.
Sure the movie has it’s flaws; the way the Batman Superman fight ending with the whole ‘our moms have the same name’ thing and Batman stumbles around like he doesn’t know what planet he’s on.. that was lame, and I still can’t figure out how or when Lex Luthor figured out Bruce Wayne was Batman, he had to know he tells Superman that he pushed Batman over the edge with the bombing and the ‘You let your family die’ newspaper clippings, but that was sent to Bruce Wayne, so I don’t know.
The biggest flaw with the movie I think is that there is a scene missing!! It leaves us to fill in a blank and try to make Lex Luthor’s motivations make sense. So let’s do that shall we… my best theory.. The missing scene comes when Lex is in the Genesis chamber and the ship tells him it holds the knowledge of 100,000 universes, and he responds with ‘Teach me’ but that’s it.. next we see Lex he’s loading General Zod into the Genesis chamber and covering him in his own blood.. why? Is that symbolic? What did Lex learn from the ship? Was Lex always working for Darkseid to kill Superman or was his original motivation purely jealously that then escalated when he learned of Darkseid in the chamber? Lex clearly knows who Darkseid is; that is who he’s rambling about from his jail cell at the end of the flick.. there’s a scene there we didn’t see.
That’s what gives me hope that Justice League will feature big reveals and tie everything together.. once we see the whole story it was be one brilliant ride.
Almost on cue.. this is a SUPER INTERESTING new development… as I’m writing this Warner Bros. released this deleted scene..
Is that Steppenwolf?? And is he holding Mother Boxes? The devices used to transport Darkseid and his army across universes? It sure looks like it.. it also looks very much like the box that Vic Stone‘s Dad had in the Cyborg cameo clip. If those are Mother Boxes that would link Lex Luthor and Darkseid directly.. interesting they left that out of the original cut of the film, especially since Lex gets arrested here and next we would see him he is rambling about the dinner bell being rung amongst the stars from his jail cell. Interesting!
Ok that’s it I’m done with MY rambling now..
