It’s possible for a band to survive a change of lead singer, but all options being equal, this isn’t something a group would like to do. I Mother Had two very successful records with Edwin as their frontman, but by 1997, he let it be known that he wanted to go his own way. So, after one last round of shows, Edwin departed in mid-1997 and embarked on a solo career.
His replacement was Brian Byrne, a Newfoundlander who took a chance and sent in a demo tape—which, by the way was originally thrown in the trash before someone recommended that they give this guy a listen. Brian joined up with I Mother Earth and has been with them since 1998, even through all the hiatuses and reunions and 21st century recordings.
But now there’s a wrinkle. That part of the story is next.
