Ever thought that your name didn’t suit you at all?
Well, it’s Name Yourself Day, and it’s your time to rebrand yourself! Maybe you’re a Steve and want to be a Kirk, maybe you’re a Jessica and have always wanted to be a Amy, today is your day to try on a new name.
On Name Yourself Day, for the entire day you are able to change your name to the one of your choice. The origin of the holiday is unknown, but it’s definitely something interesting to consider. What if you were given a different name when you were born, or maybe your parents waited until you were old enough to allow you to choose your own name?
Many musicians and artists have changed their name, for various reasons. Some were improvements, while others may have wanted to stick to the originals. Here are a few of the most famous name changes:
Flea, aka Michael Peter Balzary (Red Hot Chilli Peppers).
While on a ski trip with original banmates Anthony, Hillel, and Barry. They decided to not use their real names on the trip, with Kiedis being called “Swan”, and Flea got his name from his original nickname, “Mike-B the Flea”. This name was taken because of Flea’s onstage energy and antics.
Slash, aka Saul Hudson (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver)
Slash has had the nickname ever since he was a kid, and it has just naturally stuck with him since. Need a killer guitar solo? Better call Saul.
Gotye, aka Wouter De Backer (Gotye)
The name Gotye is a pronunciation respelling of “Gauthier”, the French version of Gotye’s given Dutch name “Wouter”.
There really is a day for everything!
