5 songs you must check out this week!
Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, “No Love Like Yours”
PersonA (Community Music Group)
RIYL: Arcade Fire, Lumineers, Mumford & Sons
Before you ask, yes, the last letter in the album title is supposed to be capitalized. Previews of the record were made available on SoundCloud, so hardcore fans already know what to expect.
Played Coachella yesterday and will play again this coming weekend. No Toronto show yet, but they are playing the Rock the Park Music Festival in London on July 16.
Kongos, “Take It From Me”
RIYL: Kings of Leon, Kasabian, The Boxer Rebellion
The four Kongos brothers—they’re from South Africa, remember?—will be back with a third album on June 10. The artwork of the new album features a really pissed-off looking gorilla. I don’t know what that means.
The Dandy Warhols, “You Are Killing Me”
Distortland (Dine Alone Records)
RIYL: Really? You’ve never heard of them?
Courtney Taylor-Taylor (how awesome a name is that?) and crew are back with an album for the first time in four years—this time on Canada’s Dine Alone label—this is one of three singles that preceded the record (the other two being “STGGO” and “Catcher in the Rye”). For some unknown (and misguided) reason, this album is also available on cassette.
Hot Hot Heat, “Kid Who Stays in the Picture”
Hot Hot Heat (Dine Alone)
RIYL: XTC, OK Go, The Killers
Nice to see the boys from Victoria back in action, although they’ve made noises about this being their farewell album. The new album—their first since Future Breeds in 2010—will be out June 24.
If you can’t wait, there’s a Record Store Day 7-inch called “Bobby Joan Sex Tape,” which will also be on the new album. (By the way, title of this song is a Hollywood reference.)
The Darcys, “Miracle”
(Arts & Crafts)
RIYL: The Tragically Hip, The National, Some Springsteen/Neil Young
The Juno nominees and Polaris Long List survivors (not to mention a group admired by the Hip) are down to just two founding members, Jason Crouse and Wes Marskell. Damn good looking merch, by the way.
