GOOD IDEA –
Reusable bags. Last Friday we were talking about Earth Day and mentioned that using reusable bags was a really good thing to do. And then later in the day I got an e-mail from someone who dropped some pretty nutso stats about plastic bags.
First of all Canadians use in excess of 9 billion plastic bags a year, and that’s a low estimate. And a lot of regions right here in the GTA don’t recycle plastic bags. I live in Durham, and they don’t recycle bags, you need to bring them into a grocery store … and that’s IF the grocery store will accept them, cause a lot of stores don’t … apparently when they began recycling bags at grocery stores, people got confused and started putting garbage in the designated recycling bins.
Now the reason plastic get used so often is the reason they can cause such problems. Plastic is really really durable. To the point it doesn’t break down. It gets pretty close, eventually turning into tiny little granules that wind up in the water supply and get ingested … poisoning animals at the base of the food chain and increase the acidity of bodies of water. Which affects gas exchange … which is kind of important if we want to keep living.
Now I know this whole wanting to live and having a planet to give to our kids thing seldom makes people care … but you can also save money. Plastic bags cost a dime, and last what three or four uses, tops? A reusable bag costs a dollar … and I have some that are over ten years old and I still use them.
So save money, save the oceans, save the planet … and use reusable bags.
