I’ve never really understood why Nickelback seems to attract so much hate. It seems really out of proportion, you know? Maybe science can provide the answer. Professor Salli Anttonen of the University of Eastern Finland wrote a paper for a journal called Metal Music Studies seeking to answer this question.
Her paper was entitled “‘Hypocritical BS Performed Through Gritted Teeth’: Authenticity Discourses in Nickelback’s Album Reviews in Finnish Media” and concludes that the true source of hate for the band is their perceived lack of authenticity and their ability to crank out grunge-light songs which has resulted in them becoming too popular with the wrong type of music fan. I quote: “The hope and memory of grunge can be seen to be soiled in the worst kind of way in the hands of bands such as Nickelback, who represent everything grunge was against, not least of all commercialism.”
