Being thankful for the musical genius Gord Downie…
Earlier this morning we received news that Gord Downie has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.
But let’s not focus on what we’re losing so much as what we’ve been given. 13 albums with another planned for release later this year. Thousands of concerts, and millions of memories.
I saw my first hip show when I was 14 years old. It was actually the first show I went to without my parents. Since then I’ve seen the hip at least fifteen times. I’d actually have to sit down and write it out cause I’ve seen them so many times, but if you’d asked me to go see them tomorrow … even without hearing about Gord Downie, I’d still go.
Cause EVERY show they do is different. And a huge part of that was Gord Downie, every time he performed he added something. The Killer Whale Tank version of New Orleans Is Sinking is a perfect example. It was a ten minute version of a four minute song full of improvised lyrics about Shamu… but having seen them enough times I know that’s really not some freak occurance. That was every Hip show.
The Hip are hitting the road one last time. You need to go. Period.
