RIYL: Flaming Lips, Ween, trippin’ on ‘shrooms and wine
Another standalone single—at least so far. It was heralded by a series of trippy/weird teaser videos on Beck’s Instagram account. Who else but Beck could write a lyric like “Lamborghini shitzu?”
Father John Misty, “Real Love Baby”
Single (Sub Pop)
RIYL: Fleet Foxes (obviously), Harry Nilsson, Band of Horses
Father John Misty (Josh Tillman to the DMV) channels some 70s sounds—think the yacht rock c.1978 of bands like Pablo Cruise, but more lo-fi—as his follow-up to writing a jingle for a Prius commercial and finding time to write lyrics to the House of Cards theme. He’ll be in Toronto for NXNE.
All Lit Up (Sleepless Records)
RIYL: Tegan and Sara, LIGHTS, Dragonette
Punchy alt-pop from a four-piece band from Newfoundland who have been around for about seven years. Maybe you’ve seen them open for Arkells, Tegan and Sara or LIGHTS.
Glass Animals, “Life Itself”
How to Be a Human Being (Harvest/Caroline)
RIYL: Foals, Bombay Bicycle Club, Wild Beats
Jeebus, it’s only June and we’re already looking at a single from an album that won’t be out until October 5. This song picked up over a million Spotify streams in just a week, so something’s obviously happening here. Good press buzz, too. They’ll be at Wayhome on July 24.
Dirty Heads, “That’s All I Need”
Dirty Heads (Five Seven Music)
RIYL: Sublime, 311, Slightly Stoopid
The band says this record is “way more reggae and hip hop than the last album. That’s why there is no title.” If that makes sense to you, please translate. No, wait. I don’t care. Dirty Heads will hit the road this summer with Sublime with Rome on July 1.
