The Darenots burst onto the scene last week with the release of their debut EP, The Now Is Truth. As the weeks in Toronto get hotter and hotter, it’s the perfect time to listen to the new release from this up and coming local band.
The Darenots succeed in creating a sound about as loud as you could expect from any four-member group. Their music is a mishmash of genres, like someone threw reggae music and party rock in a pot and added large dashes of electronic music, rap, and dub. It’s cool to hear a band that can get so down and dirty on certain tracks, and then bring a bubbly, pop-sound to the next one.
The Now Is Truth is an extremely fun listen and is the perfect pump-up album for any occasion. The only way that the Darenots went wrong with this release is by making it too short, but hey, quality over quantity, right? Weighing in at 27 minutes long, this 7-track EP will have you craving more, but in the meantime it serves as a great introduction to the band and will no doubt do it’s job in attracting more of an interest for the next release.
Standouts from the album include the tracks “Good Good”, “Heavyweight” and “911”. If you like songs that make you want to dance like crazy and yell expletives at the top of your lungs, these ones are for you. One of the greatest qualities of this album is that it captures most of what the Darenots bring to the stage during their live performances. Having said that, it’s still a unique and amazing experience to see these guys play live. The energy and enthusiasm they bring to the stage makes for an extremely positive experience. Lucky for us, the Darenots are throwing an album release party at The 300 Club in Toronto this Saturday. If you like music and good times, it would be a smart decision to go see this band. I guarantee you you’ll enjoy yourself. Just make sure you’re in shape, there’s going to be a lot of jumping around.
Do yourself a favour and listen to The Now Is Truth today.
