Here’s some food for thought!
Expiration dates are kind of confusing so Watch Mojo has put together a list of the Top 5 things we need explained about food.
#5 Use by/Sell by/Best by
These are not the same thing! Watch Mojo has provided a general guideline for North America that we can refer to.
Use by – When the manufacturer would like consumer to use the product
After that date quality of product is no longer good after that date.
Sell by – Just for retailers. Tells them when the product should be taken off the shelf. Does not mean product is no longer good after that date.
Best by – Is how long a product will be most flavourful and have the nutritional content advertised on the label.
#4 Not just food that has an expiration date
Disinfectant, bleach, batteries.
Usefulness can degrade within a year or less because the chemical compounds begin to deteriorate or something. Ou, science.
Medicine also expires! Not in a harmful way necessarily, but its effectiveness is weakened.
#3 Some products last for (almost) ever
Rice can last up to 25 years. Twinkie are good for 30 years.
Honey has an infinite self life! Sweet.
#2 New sensors can detect spoilage in foods
Where can we buy these? Check out Amazon.
#1 There are apps that can reduce food waste
New apps help would-be hungry people get would-be wasted food.
Like Pair Up, a platform for retailers to sell almost expired food for a discounted price and Truckers Against Hunger where truckers donate undelivered food to food shelters.
