Dan Mangan “Race to the Bottom”
Unmake EP (Arts & Crafts)
RIYL: Said the Whale, Bon Iver, Hey Rosetta!
Dave Grohl loves this guy from Smithers, BC. Remember how Dave guested on a song called “Vessel” from Dan’s Club Meds album last year? I’m not sure if this EP will be released in physical form; it looks like a digital-only release.
The Head and the Heart “All We Ever Knew”
Signs of Light (Warner)
Recommended If You Like: Kaleo, Young Empires, Wintersleep
This Seattle indie folk band sounds like they’re doing a Mumford & Sons-like pivot to something more Coldplay-ish, i.e. less banjoes and more guitars. But fear not: the fiddle has not been forsake—at least for this song. The album is due September 6.
Twenty One Pilots “Heathens”
Suicide Squad Soundtrack (Atlantic)
RIYL: X-Ambassadors, MGMT, Walk the Moon
The band says their next album will be “more confident.” Jeebus, after the success they’ve had with Blurryface, I hope so. The soundtrack to Suicide Squad will be out August 5.
Bastille “Good Grief”
Wild World (Republic)
RIYL: MGMT, Keane, Gotye
These guys got a ton of mileage off their debut album from three years ago, which sold in the millions. Now it’s time for The Difficult Second Album™. Wild World will be here September 22. (I should point out that there are some surprise breasts in this video.)
Serena Ryder “Got Your Number”
RIYL: Alanis Morissette, Joss Stone, Bonnie Rait
“Stompa,” the big single from the last album, attracted a ton of global attention while the album itself (Harmony, remember?) won a Juno. That’s a nice set-up for this record. Can she pull it off?
