Now you may be asking yourself, “What is a totem?” A totem is a long staff, with a uniquely created figure on top. Whether it be a character from pop culture, a cutout of a celebrity, or another strange creature, totems allow for you to express the real you!
Remember losing your parents in the grocery store as a kid? If they had a totem, that would have been no problem! At WayHome Music & Arts Festival, there are totems galore, and they are a huge help for when you lose your friends in the enormous crowds. Last year, there were a few totems, but this year was the totem explosion!
Here are a few of our favourite totems from WayHome 2016…
The “Dope” Totem
Created by Alana Colgan & Briana Kilty, the “Dope” sign is by far the most recognizable, towering over all of the other totems.
The “Baby Ogre” Totem
Jess Rodriguez and Tarah Silva didn’t plan on bringing a totem with them, but when they opened a younger brother’s sleeping bag and found three baby ogres inside, they took it as a sign from the Totem lords!
The “Puppy Trudeau” Totem
Who knew Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could pull off the dog ears? Ben Luymes pays tribute to our PM using the classic Snapchat filter.
The “Jar Jar Binks” Totem
When your totem gets a personal shoutout from Mac Demarco, you know that you are doing something right. Even it is one of the most repulsive characters in Star Wars history, creator Will Hall sure doesn’t seem to mind.
The “#WaldoWayHome” Totem
Found him! Charles Simpson has brought Waldo along for his first Way Home experience.
Don’t Forget – The Edge Cat
If you spot our strung out kitty totem, take a selfie with it and use the #EdgeAtWayHome hashtag for your chance to win a signed guitar by WayHome artists!
And here are some honourable mentions…
