The Balconies, “Money Money”
Rhonda (Coalition Music/Warner Music)
Recommended If You Like: Florence + the Machine, Phantogram, Yeah Yeah Yeahs
This is a band that has developed and matured with every single release. I’m most interested to see what their next album will sound like when it comes out in October. Stay tuned for the band’s Sugar Beach Session we did with Jacquie, Steve and Liam. They crushed this song and the title track of the new album.
Okkverville River, “Okkerville River RIP”
Away (ATO Records)
RIYL: Jeff Buckley, Elliot Smith, some REM
If you like your indie folk in the raw and scruffy side, then this band from Austin might be for you–maybe. Head dude Will Sheff—he’s the only guy we really need talk about—has a new backing band which has helped him take his sound in new directions. This begs the question: Can we read anything into the title of this song?
The Zolas, “Get Dark”
Swooner (Light Organ Records)
RIYL: Arcade Fire, New Pornographers, Arkells
Another single from the Swooner album, one that takes more of a synth-pop direction. The original video features what looks (very vaguely) like a bleeding Sony Discman. Where did they find one of those?
Grouplove, “Welcome to Your Life”
Big Mess (Canvasback/Atlantic)
RIYL: Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, Mother Mother
Third album from this LA band who seems to place almost every single they’ve released on some kind of video game or TV show. Do you watch BoJack Horseman? They did the closing theme. It’s just a matter of time before this song ends up somewhere similar.
Bad Animal, “Faux Filles”
RIYL: Billy Talent, Arctic Monkeys, Strokes
Hard drinking tattooed foursome from Calgary who have nothing in common with country music. Watch these guys. Seriously.
