Jagwar Ma, ”O B 1”
Everyone Now & Then (Marathon Arists/Mom + Pop/Future Classic)
Recommended If You Like: Foals, Primal Scream, MGMT
Psych-y, dance-y duo from Sydney, Australia, who found a place in my chillout playlist with a re-release of a 2011 song called “Come Save Me” a couple of years ago. This is the first new material from the band since Howlin’, their 2013 debut album. If you know the name Warpaint, that’s the band’s Stella Mozgawa on drums.
The Great Detachment (Dine Alone Records)
RIYL: Matthew Good, City and Colour, Joel Plaskett Emergency
Second single from the band’s sixth album (the follow-up to “Amerika,” if you’re keeping track). They’re one of the big gets for Riverfest in Elora, Ontario, on August 21. They’ll make it worth the drive.
Aurora, “I Went Too Far”
All My Demons Greet Me as a Friend (Decca)
RIYL: Lykke Li, Lorde, Tori Amos
This Norwegian singer—full name Aurora Aksnes—has been getting quite a bit of love in Europe and the UK thanks to the fanciful and sometimes dark imagery of her songs. One track on the album entitled “Murder Song” is told from the point of view of someone who has just been killed. That should give you a clue about what’s going on here.
The Belle Game, “Yuh”
Single (Arts & Crafts)
RIYL: Cults, Best Coast, Cayucas
Here’s the first new single from the Vancouver-based dark pop quartet since their 2013 debut album, Ritual Tradition Habit. For maximum effect, listen to this in the dark with a strong drink. Catch them at the TURF Festival September 16.
BANKS, “F**k With Myself”
RIYL: Bishop Briggs, Lorde, The Weeknd
Moody R&B tinged with Massive Attack (she had to have been a fan growing up). Strange video, too. What’s with the nakedness and mannequins? The album—whatever it’s called—will be out September 30.
