In the second installment of the Edge Secret Thing, we took to the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern to surprise our winners with a big band in a small venue. Previously, American-folk rockers, The Lumineers, surprised the crowd at the Mod Club. This time around we recruited the help of our friends, and hometown-heroes, Billy Talent, to take things up a notch. On the eve of their fifth studio album, Afraid of Heights, the guys were noticeably eager to show off some new tunes. As lead singer, Benjamin Kowalewicz, said (with a little tongue-in-cheek), “What band has gone from playing the SkyDome, to playing in the Horseshoe Tavern?!”
For a band that has been together for more than 23 years, these guys don’t seem to be slowing down. Their self-titled 2003 debut, Billy Talent, went triple platinum, and the anticipation is very high for this latest release. With tracks like, “Afraid of Heights”, and “Louder Than the DJ”, the band is off to a great start. It wouldn’t be a true Billy Talent show, however, if they did not pay homage to the past, when the delved into many of the classic hits that has made their sound so recognizable. We were sure to hear, “Devil in a Midnight Mass”, “Try Honesty”, “Rusted from the Rain”, and “Fallen Leaves”, but got a special treat on “Red Flag”. When Billy Talent kicked into 2006’s, “Red Flag”, they were joined by Alexisonfire-member, and 102.1 the Edge DJ, Wade MacNeil, to give an extra punch to that signature chorus. It was truly an unforgettable moment for those who were there.
It is hard to describe the kind of excitement and energy that filled the Horseshoe Tavern before Billy Talent went on, but the crowd knew that they were in for something special. As Ben said during the show, “We have been together for 23 years, and we have never been more excited to put out some new tunes,” and the crowd definitely shared in that sentiment. As Billy Talent hits the road to tour Afraid of Heights, it is safe to say that no one will get a chance to see them like we got to see them at the Horseshoe Tavern. If you were there, definitely consider yourself one of the lucky ones, and if not, see you at the next Edge Secret Thing!
