David Bowie appeared in a lot of movies over his lifetime, but his first was his weirdest. He played an alien named Thomas Jerome Newton in a 1976 film called The Man Who Fell to Earth. It follows his trip to New Mexico in search of water for his doomed planet.
The casting was perfect. After all, Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust character was still resonated. And Bowie kinda thought he was Ziggy. Coked out most of the time and existing on a diet of peppers and milk, Bowie’s weight dropped to less than 90 pounds. He carried a telescope with him on tour so he could scan the heavens for signs of the alien mothership he was certain was monitoring his movements.
The Man Who Fell to Earth is a must-see for Bowie fans—and here’s good news. It’s been restored to 4K resolution and will return to theatres for a limited run next month before moving to home video.
