There haven’t been a lot of punk rock movies made over the years—certainly not a lot of enduring ones—but the bio-pic Sid & Nancy is an exception.
Directed by Alex Cox (and featuring a pre-nose job Courtney Love in the opening sequence), this 1986 movie has become something of a cult classic over the decades. It was panned when it first came out, but it kinda grew on people.
It tells the story of Sid Vicious, the doomed bass player of the Sex Pistols and his doomed junkie girlfriend, Nancy Spungen. It follows their relationship through to Nancy’s murder in late 1978 and Sid’s 1979 heroin overdose while awaiting trial.
Sid & Nancy has been restored and prepped for a re-release to cinemas this fall in commemoration of its 30th anniversary. If you’ve never seen one of the most famous punk rock movies ever made, you’re going to have your chance.
