Kings of Leon, “Waste a Moment”
Walls or maybe WALLS (Sony)
Recommended If You Like: Like Skynyrd’s grandkids but without all the guitar solos.
Wait a second. Aren’t all KoL album titles supposed to contain five syllables? This twist in the universe had more than one media outlet freaking just a little. Not to worry. WALLS is apparently an acronym for We Are Like Love Songs. Or so I’ve been told. This song will appear as the first track on the album when it shows up October 14.
The Moth & The Flame, “Red Flag”
Young & Unafraid (Elektra)
RIYL: Flaming Lips, Imagine Dragons, some aspects of Radiohead
The Moth & The Flame (TMTF for short; they’re cool with that) started in Utah but now to their things out of Los Angeles. They can both be very artsy (cf. their love of giant public artwork) and traditional (their debut album was never issued digitally in deference a need to appreciate the physical nature of musical art). Let’s see what they’ve got planned for this touring cycle.
Third Eye Blind, “Cop vs Phone Girl”
We Are Drugs (Mega Collider)
RIYL: The last bit of the Clinton years
Yes, them. Stephen Jenkins and crew are back—actually, they never left; they’ve been a going concert since 1993—with a song that goes through everything from racism and Black Lives Matter to police brutality. Still wanna argue that the 90s aren’t making some kind of a comeback?
Against Me! “333”
Shaft Shift with Me (Total Treble Music)
RIYL: Rise Against, Green Day, Jimmy Eat World
Great title, perfecting in keeping with Laura Jane Grace’s gender transition over the last couple of years. This is the first of three songs to precede the album that’s due on Friday. Interesting fact: the video was directed by actress Ione Skye.
The Hunna, “You & Me”
RIYL: A little like early Oasis (but without the dickhead attitude) crossed with American pop punk.
Indie rock quartet from Hertfordshire, England. Quite the buzz with sellouts cross the south that will be followed by an opening slot with Jimmy Eat World in North America. Catchy single. Can they maintain the momentum?
