Kaiser Chiefs, “Hole in My Soul”
Stay Together (Universal)
Recommended If You Like: Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys
Second single (the follow-up to the dancey “Parachute” from earlier this year) from Leeds band’s sixth studio record, which is due October 7. I’ve been hoping for these guys to make some kind of North American breakthrough since their first album in 2005. (“I Predict a Riot” from Employment has been on pretty much every iPod/iPhone I’ve ever owned.) Fingers crossed.
Bear Mountain, “On My Own”
Badu (Last Gang Records)
RIYL: Passion Pit, Big Data, Cut Copy
Another “mountain” band from Vancouver (cf. also Black Mountain and Pink Mountain; the Rockies have that kind of effect, I guess) with a single co-written by—wait for it—Nelly Furtado. Frontman Ian Bevis approached her with the idea of working together and she was into it. See what you think of their take on the West Coast electro-pop approach.
Bravestation, “13th Floor”
Single (Culvert Music)
RIYL: Start with Duran Duran and then listen to The 1975.
Toronto three-piece with a serious Duran Duran/80s jones and some building international buzz, especially through some influential Spotify playlists. New Wave lives!
Charlotte Cardin, “Dirty Dirty”
Big Boy EP (Cult Nation)
RIYL: Imagine a soulful Celine Dion
Yeah, Charlotte was doing well as a model in Montreal, but what she really wanted to do was sing. Things started with a single called “Big Boy” about a year ago and now has enough original material to release this debut EP.
Zipper Club, “Going the Distance”
RIYL: “Synth-bred, weird-sounding music”
While James Iha waits to see if Billy Corgan will put reunite the classic lineup of the Smashing Pumpkins, he’s taking on some production assignments. One of his clients is Zipper Club, a two-piece boy-girl group. Actually, ZC tracked down Iha themselves, saying that he was the only producer with which they wanted to work.
