CRX, “Ways to Fake It”
New Skin (Columbia)
Recommended If You Like: Strokes, obviously.
No, it’s not a hot hatch from Honda. In this case. CRX is a project from The Strokes lead guitar player Nick Valesi and featuring contribution from Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age. The full album is due on Friday and a big tour is imminent.
JPNSGRLS, “A Comprehensive List of Things I Love”
Divorce (Light Organ Records)
RIYL: Arctic Monkeys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Modest Mouse
Everyone needs a shot of garage rock once in a while. The vowel-challenged JPNSGRLS (pronounced “Japanese Girls”) have been thrashing away since they were formed in Vancouver in 2010. They’re on tour in support of this record in the UK and Europe until the end of the year. Then it’s the fun of a Canadian winter tour.
Charlotte Cardin, “Dirty Dirty”
Big Boy EP (Cult Nation)
RIYL: Amy Winehouse, James Blake, Allen Toussaint
If you’re familiar with La Voix—Quebec’s version of The Voice—you’ll know that Charlotte was a top-four finisher in 2013. Since then, she’s played Osheaga and recorded this EP of electro R&B. Will there be a full-length record in 2017? Stay tuned.
Rag’n’Bone Man, “Human”
RIYL: Michael Kiwanuka, Son Little, Walk Off the Earth
Rory Graham—he comes from a town called Uckfield. Really.—is a former MC with a drum’n’bass crew who has extended himself into the area of R&B and blues. “Human” has already been a #1 hit in Austria, Germany and Switzerland..
Love Thy Brother ft. Ariel Beesley, “Love Me Better”
Single (Bright Antenna Records)
RIYL: Nena’s “99 Red Balloon,” an alternative Lady Gaga, Pet Shop Boys
Love They Brother really is two brothers—Connor and Liam Clarke—who are doing music on the side. Connor runs an artist marketing company called Wavo and Liam is a producer whose music has been heard on Keeping Up with the Kardashians. (Please don’t hold that against him; it was a paycheque.) Ariel is an LA-based model who’d rather sing. Try not to be creeped out by the stalker-y intro to the video.
