Tommy Hawkins, “That’s The Way I Walk”
Amy EP (TDM/Fontana North)
Recommended If You Like: Anything Hawksley and Thomas have done, obviously, plus Cold War Kids, Young the Giant
Not the old basketball player or the Aussie rules footballer. Nor the fossil collector, 17th century poet, English politician or mathematician. This awkward-to-Google Tommy Hawkins isn’t a real person. Instead, it’s an indie rock project consisting of Hawksley Workman and Thomas D’Arcy. They’ve always wanted to work together and they finally had their chance.
Childish Gambino, “Me and Your Mama”
Awaken, My Love! (Glassnote)
RIYL: Das Racist, Kendrick Lamar, Wu-Tang Clan
Donald Glover managed to find time to recorded a new album while starring in, writing and executive producing the FX series, Atlanta. And to top it off, the first single explores blues and rock, sounds new to the Gambino canon. This could get even more interesting. We’ll see when the album arrives December 2.
Nikki’s Wives, “Fantasize”
For E•V•E•R• EP (Cadence Music)
RIYL: Phantogram, Lorde, Bishop Briggs
Toronto trio lead by Nikki Whitehead (her “wives” are two dudes) whom I’ve been keeping an eye on for a while now. You might want to give them a look when they play the Phoenix with She Wants Revenge on December 17.
William Wild, “When I’ve Been Gone”
Audiotree EP (Random Records)
RIYL: Mellow Kings of Leon, Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes
Alternative folk with an occasional touch of cello from Knoxville. He calls what he does “indie rock for mountain dwellers.” Interpret that as you will.
Hannah Georgas, “Evelyn”
For Evelyn (Dine Alone Records)
RIYL: Dan Mangan, Feist, Kathleen Edwards
Call this the title track of Hannah’s fourth album, For Evelyn, the bulk of which was inspired by her aged grandmother. She’s just finishing up a European tour ahead of a Mod Club gig on December 7.
