Remember that thing we all thought we didn’t need? Well, turns out your appendix might actually serve a purpose after all.
If you really think about it, why would the human body include something that there is absolutely no use for? The appendix might cause some people a lot of pain, but it also might serve as a “safe house” for beneficial bacteria.
In 2016, it was discovered that removing the appendix from mice makes them more susceptible to infection. Apparently, the appendix harbours beneficial gut bacteria. So for example, if you were to acquire a gut infection, the bacteria that was safely stored in your appendix would come out and begin to heal and protect. Turns out, it might actually strengthen your whole immune system and help you to recover quicker when you get sick.
So we might not absolutely need our appendix, but it’s not entirely pointless either.
