It’s a crazy idea! Or is it? Eagles are being trained to take down drones mid flight as a part of France’s initiative to defend against small, unmanned aircrafts that could potentially pose a threat. With four golden eagles under their belt, named after the Three Musketeers – Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and D’Artagnan – they seem to be doing well so far.
The eagles’ training begins at birth, where the eagles ‘hatch on the wreckage of old drones and then live on top of them during their early feeding period’. This teaches the birds to hunt drones as if they were an actual food source. Stone cold killers from birth.
This type of military work is perfect for golden eagles as their wingspan is nearly seven feet. They’re super fast and can spot a target from a mile away. They must be making good money, working in such a niche market. Apparently, eagles are just naturally inclined to want to hunt drones, so this seems like a win for sure! Does this mean we may start training lions, tigers, and bears too? Imagine the possibilities.
