The title’s pretty self-explanatory, but this is a pretty interesting story. So by now, most of us have heard of the dwindling bee population that has become a real problem. Cheerios launched an ad campaign, #bringbackthebees… They did this by pledging to give away 200 million seeds to anyone and everyone who signed up through their website. Then seven days later, they shared that they would be distributing over 1.5 billion seeds to the US and Canada.
Seems amazing right? WRONG… Turns out General Mills made a big mistake, distributing flowers that aren’t universally friendly to the environment. Uh Oh.. Such a great idea, and an even bigger mistake..
According to Uproxx, ‘an ecologist told Grub Street that non-native plants can take up space and use up all of an area’s resources. Invasive species can spread disease and cause damage to other plants as well as humans. The National Wildlife Foundation warns that invasive species can out-compete native species for food, carry disease, change food webs, decrease biodiversity, and alter ecosystem conditions. So… not great.’
Ad campaigns designed to be a good thing should be just that! GOOD! Someone on the marketing team at General Mills made a big boo boo. Going to be interesting seeing how they handle this one. Beehave everyone. Read more here.
