This past Saturday night at Lee’s Palace, Milky Chance, a duo that has broken their way into the alternative folk music scene all the way from Germany, reminded us why it is important to explore talent from across the world. We were shown how music can be refreshing – and Milky Chance is a band that can bring a unique sound to all of the music enthusiasts itching for more.
The room was absolutely packed with fans who were anxious in anticipation for the band to hit the stage, and once they did, you could feel the spirits of the room rise. The crowd was loud, but wholeheartedly captivated – mostly because it has been some time since we have had the opportunity to see Milky Chance live, and so much has changed for this up-and-coming band since we have. The band mentioned that this was their first time playing their new songs in front of a crowd, as their album titled “Blossom” was just released the day before. Of course, this wasn’t news to the fans in the room. When asked if anyone has bought the album yet, cheers of appreciation roared, and hundreds of hands were in the air showing our excitement for what we were going to witness throughout the night.
As the band proved to us, this new album is something to watch out for. New singles such as the title track “Blossom” and “Cocoon” were received with the crowd’s singing in-sync with what the band was intricately executing on-stage. However, in order to appreciate where the band is now, we must remember where they came from. Milky Chance was sure to remind us of this – playing through all the crowd favourites from their debut album Sadnecessary, including “Flashed Junk Mind” – no one missed a beat. The underlying reggae tones that the band mentioned inspires their music, in combination with lead-vocalist Clemens Rehbein’s distinctive voice, and the rest of the bands many talents; with producing behind the scenes and playing numerous instruments – we were treated to a night of music that we do not typically get to hear.
Finishing off the night with the song that started it all, “Stolen Dance”, everyone in the audience was grooving, and already excited for the bands return in August. Milky Chance’s originality is something all music fans can appreciate, and it has become clear that we’re hooked, and we can’t wait to see what else they can bring to the table.
