Kaleo, “Glass House”
Recommended If You Like: Icelandic things that aren’t quite so Björkish
Although it’s been out almost a year—its birthday will be June 10—Kaleo’s A/B album keeps throwing off singles. “Glass House” is number four is out just in time to set them up for their appearances at Coachella later this month. After that, it’s nothing but festivals, finishing up with Lollapalooza in Chicago in August.
Arkells, “Knocking at the Door”
Morning Report (Dine Alone/Universal)
RIYL: The sounds of Hamilton rising.
Another band on who has four singles from the same album. They, too, will be at Coachella for a couple of weekends before they begin zig-zagging across the US ahead of that headliner gig at the Budweiser Stage (né Molson Amphitheatre) with July Talk and “TBA special guests” on June 10.
Judah & the Lion, “Suit and Jacket”
Folk Hop ‘N’ Roll (Independent)
RIYL: Any band with a banjo since Mumford & Sons
I confess that I’ve been a little slow to warm up on these guys, probably because I’m maxed out on the modern indie/country/folk/beardy thing. But that’s just me. They barely have a day off between shows until the end of October, so someone is diggin’ their stuff.
Pleasure (Arts & Crafts)
RIYL: The way iPod commercials used to sound
Wait: has it really been six years since she released Metals? Uh-huh. The blurb from the album says the theme of the record is an exploration of “emotional limits … loneliness, private ritual, secrets, shame, mounting pressures, disconnect, tenderness, rejection, care and the lack thereof.” Someone needs a hug, stat.
Said the Whale, “I Will Follow You”
As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide (Hidden Pony)
RIYL: Arkells, Wintersleep, Matthew Good – Good ol’ Cancon, you know?
The album is just out—March 31—and the spring tour is in full effect. Nice that they sold out two shows at Lee’s Palace, too. And it’s cool that they’re playing some all-ages shows on this roadtrip. It was a little dicey when it came to this week’s upcoming shows in Buffalo, New York City and Philadelphia, but their work visas came through just in time. Like last Monday.
