Alt-J, “In Cold Blood”
Recommended If You Like: The idea of Radiohead having a weirder younger brother
Leeds-based Alt-J (or alt-J or even just ∆, which you type on a Mac by pressing Alt+J, geddit?) already won my heart with “3WW” (short for “Three Warm Words”) the first release from the upcoming Relaxer album, which is due June 9. I’m hoping that this third record will be a massive breakthrough from the band.
Royal Blood, “Lights Out”
How Did We Get So Dark (Warner)
RIYL: White Stripes, Pixies, Black Keys
When Royal Blood’s self-titled debut came out in 2013, the rock world was in thrall to bands featuring beardy men with banjos. Yet somehow Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher managed to score a couple of radio hits, contributing some much-needed guitar noise to the proceedings. They’re back to do it again, although this time they’ll have company in the guitar department. Watch for the record June 12.
Paper Lions, “Honestly”
Full Colour (Thank You Cathy)
RIYL: Earnest East Coast Indie
PEI indie pop from a band that’s been around since 2004. They’re up for four East Coast Music Awards later this month, including Entertainer of the Year, Group Recording of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Fans’ Choice Video of the Year.
Dan Auerbach, “Shine On Me”
Waiting On A Song (Easy Eye Sound)
RIYL: Beck if he played in Dire Straits
Dan Auerbach is taking a break from the Black Keys, The Arcs and producing material for other people to release his first solo album since 2009’s Keep It Hid. And if there’s something familiar sounding about some of the guitar parts on this song, it’s because Dire Straits’ Mark Knopfler agreed to supply some parts. The album will be out June 2. By the way, Easy Eye Sound is also the name of Dan’s recording studio.
Bleeker, “Where’s Your Money?”
Erase You (Five Seven Music)
RIYL: Royal Blood, noisier Black Keys, Jet
They may be from Gordon Lightfoot’s hometown of Orillia, but that’s where the similarity ends. Built around the two Perkins brothers, their debut album has landed them gigs across North America. Watch for them at The Mod Club on Tuesday, April 18.
