This June, the Oxford English Dictionary will be adding Doctor Who’s iconic ‘Sonic Screwdriver’ to their third edition.
They define it as an “electronic device which uses sound waves to perform various mechanical and technical functions.”
The Sonic Screwdriver first came to be in a 1968 episode when the second Doctor, Patrick Troughton, used it to open a hatch on a gas pipeline. It resembled a pen torch at the time, but went through many modifications throughout the years – and not just in appearance.
Traditionally, the screwdriver was used to open doors or closed off spaces, however, it eventually came to be used as a weapon, detonator, scanner, remote control, basically anything the Doctor needed…even sunglasses.
Overall, it’s a pretty useful tool and people who aren’t Whovians deserve to know about its awesomeness.
