Foo Fighters, “The Sky is a Neighbourhood”
A single? (Sony)
Recommended If You Like: Foos!
Remember a few years ago when there was that kerfuffle about Dave putting the Foo Fighters on ice while he explored some new avenues? Yeah, well, never mind, apparently. The band debuted this new song at Acoustic-4-A-Cure, a charity event put on by Sammy Hagar in San Francisco. Does this portend a new album? Or are they just looking to have something new to play on tour this summer?
Mac DeMarco, “This Old Dog”
This Old Dog (Captures Tracks)
RIYL: People who like dogs
He’s Canadian, but he’s lived in New York and now spends most of his time at his house in LA—which is where he recorded his third full-length record. There’s been some good hype and nice reviews so far. Even Pitchfork seems to like it (not that we should care about what they say, of course).
Nothing but Thieves, “Amsterdam”
Broken Machine (Sony)
RIYL: Muse, Royal Blood, Catfish and the Bottlemen
Do we really have to talk about September already? We do if we want to see what England’s Nothing But Thieves has coming up. Their second album is due September 8th, but they’ll spend the summer road testing new material at a series of festivals across the UK and Europe.
The National, “The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness”
Sleep Well Beast (4AD)
Seventh studio album from Cincinnati indie giants. It, too, is due on September 8th. Interesting that Matt Berninger doesn’t sing quite as low on this one. And the instrumentation seems to be a little more electronic. They promise that the whole album will be a departure from 2013’s Trouble Will Find Me.
Day Wave, “Something Here”
The Days We Had (Harvest Records)
RIYL: Surfer Blood, M83, Owl City
Not so much a band as a dude from Oakland, California, named Jackson Phillips, who calls up musicians to play with him whenever he has a gig. Nicely dreampop-y.
