Foo Fighters, “Run”
Recommended If You Like: Smells Like Senior Spirit
Whoa! Where did this come from? Everyone was minding their own business, getting their first caffeine hits for a Thursday morning when BAM! A new Foo Fighters single got released. No one expected this or the Dave Grohl-directed video that came with it. (The RIYL note will make more sense when you see the video.) It looks like the Foos hiatus is over.
Arcade Fire, “Everything Now”
Everything Now (Columbia/Sony)
Wait! There’s more! We had an inkling that there was new material coming soon from AF but we weren’t entirely sure because the band was teasing clues on Twitter in a way that it looked like they were coming from a Russian spambot. Then came a real 12-inch single that will be sold at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona this weekend. The band also wants us to “stay tuned for infinite content”—whatever that means.
Radiohead, “I Promise”
OK Computer (OKNOTOK) (Independent)
RIYL: Even more surprises!
A new-old song from our Oxford boys. Written and performed as far back as 1996 in months leading up to OK Computer, this unreleased recording has languished for decades. It’s now one of the bonus tracks on the 20th anniversary edition of the album that’s due June 23.
City Nights (Glassnote)
RIYL: Well, Vampire Weekend, for starters
Chris Baio, bassist for Vampire Weekend, also works as a producer and solo musician under his last name. Given that since the last VW came out in 2012, producer Rostam, drummer Chris Thomson and Baio have all put out solo projects (this is Baio’s second!), I somehow have a bad feeling about the future of Vampire Weekend. Or maybe I’m just paranoid.
Darcys, “Arizona HWY”
Centrefold (Arts & Crafts)
Here’s a hint: Do not go on a West Coast joyride in the bed of an El Camiono. It’s hot, dirty and there are no seatbelts. Another hint: El Caminos are only cool in California and Arizona. Come And please don’t give your dog this kind of haircut.
