Neil Osborne, Brad Merritt, Dave Genn and Matt Johnson currently make up Vancouver rock band, 54-40. Having been around for over 30 years now, they are one of the oldest – if not the oldest – continuously performing groups in Canada (even older than The Hip!). Can you imagine working with the same three people and not taking a break in over three decades? That takes commitment and a certain passion for what you do.
54-40 have roots reaching back to the early 1980 post-punk scene in Vancouver; playing their first show at the Smilin’ Buddha Cabaret in 1981. From Smilin’ Buddha Enjoyment to True North Records, one of Canada’s longest standing independent labels, 54-40 have released thirteen studio albums, a live DVD and toured all over the globe. Their continuous hard work has earned them numerous awards and achieved them almost a dozen Top-10 hit singles.
54-40 continues to tour and produce quality Canadian music – and I don’t see them stopping anytime soon.
To celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, The Edge is counting down great Canadian artists that we’ve played and supported over the years. We will be airing these artists everyday leading up to Canada’s 150th, as well as posting the earliest Edge exclusive interviews and performances we find in our archives. Check back everyday for new artists and support your Canadian musicians!
