A lot can happen in 7 years, a.k.a. the time that we have spent without a Gorillaz performance in Toronto. It is only fitting that Gorillaz went ape at the Air Canada Centre for their grand return on July 10th!
On the heels of their latest album, Humanz, Gorillaz set out on a worldwide tour – with support from Vince Staples (in Toronto) – to prove why these 2D-characters are actually larger than life. Busting out some famous tracks like “Rhinestone Eyes” and “Acension” earlier on helped to get the fans to their feet; drowning out any moment of silence with deafening roars. Lead singer, Damon Albarn, was overcome by the support from the crowd. As he addressed them during one of the interludes, he could only manage to utter, “I don’t know what to say, I didn’t know what to expect, but I didn’t expect this!”, in regards to the emphatic approval.
For Gorillaz fans, old and new, there was something for everybody. From the upbeat tempo and hip hop beats of “Sex Murder Party” to the mellow-paced, soft pop of “El Mañana”; once Gorillaz hit the stage, all you could do was strap yourself in and enjoy the ride! With the band on full display and incredible visuals accentuating their every move, Gorillaz put on a show that had to be seen to be believed.
If you caught the show, you know exactly what I mean.
With Gorillaz continuing on with the Humanz Tour, it looks like they’ve left the monkey business in the past. Let’s see where the next 7 years take us!
