This morning Melani & Adam had the chance to talk to Shelli Varela – A Mississauga fire captain that is working to empower people to take bold steps in their lives – Women in firefighting being one of her many focuses. She is spearheading Camp Ignite which is a camp that encourages women to be open to all opportunities, like firefighting, that are often presented by society as closed off fields only for their male counterparts.
“Camp Ignite will show you a future of limitless opportunities and that regardless of your gender, anything is possible.
Camp Ignite is a four-day camp that educates and inspires young women to follow their dreams.
The camp is open to girls in grades 11-12 (ages 16-18), and gives them an introduction to the world of firefighting. Each girl will learn about fitness, nutrition, health and teamwork.”
She is, “the creator of the inspiring, innovative system that helped her skyrocket from struggling artist to pioneer in the hyper-competitive world of Firefighting. From first female firefighter in Canada’s sixth largest city, to the high-ranking position of Fire Captain and on to “Firefighter of the Year”, Shelli has silenced the naysayers and rocked it ON HER TERMS.”
