Every year brings a new wave of bands getting back together. And no wonder, what with falling music sales and shrinking royalty cheques. It’s also really cool once again go to a gig featuring one of your favourite acts of your youth.
Generally, I’m all for reunions. I’d love to see the classic Smashing Pumpkins lineup together again. An Oasis reunion would be bonkers. And it wouldn’t it be nice to see Hooky reconcile with the rest of New Order?
At the same time, though, there are bands who should never get back together, not because such a reunion wouldn’t be fabulous, but because a resurrection would result in the destruction of myth and legend.
For example, I’m so glad that the Clash never reunited. They were of a time and era and were perfect as they were. Why sully all those memories of when the Clash really was The Only Band That Mattered. I’d put The Smiths in this category, too. The legend is so oppressively huge that a reunion would be nothing more than hype followed by dashed expectations. Sometimes you just need to let go, you know?
So here’s the question: Which bands should never reunite (in whole or in part) in order to preserve their legendary status?
