It’s been 13 years since the SkyDome (YES..the SKYDOME) was renamed in 2004 to the Rogers Centre and we still can’t get half the city to get on board with that name when Scotiabank decided to throw another curve-ball at us this morning …or was it a knuckle-puck? (Is there a “Wonky Movement” play-equivalent in Basketball?)
With all the corporate money being thrown at sports arenas, almost all major sporting stadiums/arenas have been renamed by the businesses that are throwing that money around. As is tradition, the internet was filled with reactions to name change.
Toronto Caribbean Carnival will ALWAYS be Caribana— Fluffaz (@theB0SNIAN) August 29, 2017
Rogers Center will ALWAYS be Skydome
'Scotiabank Arena' will ALWAYS be Air Canada Centre
So if the Air Canada Centre was nicknamed the hangar, will Scotiabank arena be nicknamed the deposit box?— Michael Wilson (@mdubs91) August 30, 2017
They think we'll just start calling it Scotiabank Arena? That's rich. Richer than they think.— Kid Craig (@KidCraig) August 29, 2017
With the arena having been the home of the Toronto Maple Leafs since they moved from Maple Leaf Gardens (Since renamed the Mattamy Athletic Centre), their newly found playoff fan hero, Dart Guy, weighed in on the matter.
While there will be a lot of changes for Maple Leafs fans that grew up with the A.C.C, the same goes for Raptors fans as those following Toronto’s basketball team have only had one arena to know and love. One of the biggest stars to play for the team even gained his nickname from the Air Canada brand.
Unfortunately the two teams didn’t get to dodge the biggest bullet that could have came with losing a sponsorship from Air Canada. Having to fly Air Canada.
July 2018 will be official name change of ACC to Scotiabank Arena. Air Canada will stay as Leaf - Raptors official airline as part of deal.— Lance Hornby (@sunhornby) August 29, 2017
