U2, “You’re the Best Thing About Me”
Songs of Experience (Universal)
RIYL: Er, U2?
As a band that’s had a ton of radio hits, U2 is frustrated that the string has dried up in recent years. This song, which has gone through a series of incarnations over the last 18 months, is a serious attempt to become a multi-format radio band again. Can they do it? We’ll see.
Beck, “Up All Night”
RIYL: Er, Beck?
We first started getting a taste of Colors two years ago when Beck released “Dreams” in the summer of 2015. A year’s worth of radio silence followed until “Wow” dropped almost exactly a year later. Then came “Dear Life” a couple of weeks ago. And here we are with a fourth song from the eleven-track album (two of which are versions of “Dreams”) and a song from the FIFA 2017 video game.
Megative, “More Time”
Single (Last Gang)
RIYL: The Specials’ “Ghost Town”, The Good the Band and the Queen, Gorillaz
Fronted by Tim Fletcher of The Stills, this song includes some un-Stillish dancehall rhymes courtesy of Screechy Dan, making the song feel like something out of Coventry around 1979—or maybe something like Damon Albarn might dream up between operas about monkeys. Love the dub feel of the whole thing.
Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile, “Over Everything”
Lotta Sea Lice (Matador)
RIYL: Freaky troubadours who nonetheless have a sense of humour
Talk about a match made in heaven. Both Courtney and Kurt are freakazoid sardonic storytellers with wry senses of humor. Kurt started it, thinking about Courtney as he was writing new material at home in Phildelphia while she was at home in Melbourne. Being one of his favourite performers, he had this fantasy that they would one day work together. Sometimes you get what you wish for.
Terra Lightfoot, “Paradise”
New Mistakes (Sonic Unyon)
RIYL: Bonnie Raitt, Melissa Etheridge, Meredith Broks
Early reception of this single has been very good with the video (directed by Dustin Rabin, who has worked with the Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age and Billy Talent) picking up some nice viewership. Terra has a national tour this month and through October before she heads off through the US, UK, Japan and Australia. The album is out October 13.
