While it has only been two years since their last venture to the city of Toronto, it is always welcome news that Pixies are set to play in the GTA. Their last appearance, at TURF 2015, left Pixies’ fans wondering when we might see them again, and were happy to hear that they had planned a two-night performance at Massey Hall!
Last year’s release, Head Carrier, set the tone that Pixies were not quite finished making new music yet, and on September 29th, they came ready to play! Coming out to “Wave of Mutilation”, the audience left their seats behind for the evening as they prepared for another night of amazing music from one of alternative rock’s pioneering-forces. Lead singer, Black Francis, was pushing sonic limits with his powerful vocal performance. Those that have seen him in the past will be happy to know that his stage presence is just as mesmerizing as ever, and years of roadwork have really influenced his overall technicality. It is easy to see how his influence has trickled-down to such vocal greats as Kurt Cobain, Damon Albarn, and more.
While many were disappointed by the departure of founding member and bassist, Kim Deal, back in 2013, Paz Lenchantin has filled the role seamlessly. While it may be comparing apples to oranges, Lenchantin has had more than 3 year’s experience on the road with Pixies now and picked up exactly where Deal had left off. Her howl on “Where is my Mind?” was goosebump-inducing, to say the least. Needless to say, Pixies came ready to bring down the house, and that mission was accomplished.
If Friday night, and Saturday for those in attendance, is any indication of whether the Pixies are here to stay, consider your fears of the band not playing anymore officially squashed!
