Next time you’re singing along to Christina Aguilera’s ‘Beautiful’ make sure you don’t look like you’re screaming and make sure you’re not in Montreal.
On Sept. 27th a Montreal driver by the name of Taoufik Moalla was performing an intense rendition of a cheesy 90s hit while driving downtown Montreal. It earned him a $149 fine.
Moalla was on his way to buy a water bottle, singing this fantastic tune…
When he heard a police siren blaring behind him. At first he thought they were trying to pass, until they called on the speaker asking him to pull over.
He stopped and four police officers came over, two on each side of the car, and they searched the inside and back of his vehicle. Then they asked him if he’d screamed, to which he replied, “No, I was just singing.”
He was then given a ticket for screaming in public because apparently there’s a Montreal bylaw that states, ‘to cause disorder by screaming’ violates ‘peace and tranquility’. It can be punishable by fines ranging from $50 to $2,000.
Moalla told CTV News, “I understand if they are doing their job, they are allowed to check if everything’s okay, if I kidnapped someone or if there’s danger inside but I would never expect they would give me a ticket for that.”
