Dani's Diary-a

Game On!
Posted 11/4/2009 11:56:00 AM
My roommates and I were having a very serious conversation the other day… about board games! And how super cool they were when we were kids!

I've listed some of the most memorable games for me and some information on each. You might learn something really useless.

The Squirrel Game:

This game first came out in 1987.  I don't know anyone else who owns/owned this game, but it was one I played a lot as a kid. Basically, you roll the die, move your squirrel gamepiece around the board collecting little pinecones. If you overfill your wheelbarrow (I know, so realistic) you lose your pinecones. The point is to stash all your pinecones before anyone else - you need to hoard 15 to win.

The downside to this game is that the more you play, the less pinecones you seem to have.

Overall, it gets three pinecones out of a possible five.

Candy Land:

Originally published in 1949, Candy Land was one of the first board games played by American children. The woman who invented it in the 40s was recovering from Polio at the time.

The version I used to play was from 1985 - Queen Frostine, King Kandy, Lord Licorice... mmmm...

This game was a definitely a favourite around the Stover house - it gets four Grandma Nuts out of five!

Dream Phone:

Ahh Dream Phone... I never owned one, but who doesn't remember this commercial?

Dream phone came out in 1991, another version came out in '96 - which is right around the time I became a little more interested in boys.

When you're a young girl with glasses and a ponytail (and braces and training bras...) the idea of having dreamy hunks calling you for a date is a thrill!

The funny thing is that, even though I never owned this game as a dorky tween, I DO have it at my new place and my roomie and I actually pulled it out while we polished off a bottle of wine.

It's still a thrill talking to dreamy hunks - so really, not much has changed.

DAN, DAN MY MAN!

Ready, Set, Spaghetti:

This is a cottage game, and since we only had a few up there, it was either Ready, Set, Spaghetti or Monopoly.

Ready, Set, Spaghetti took just a little less time to play.

The game came out in 1989 and the point is to twirl the "spaghetti" or string around your fork by removing toppings from the gameboard.

I say four meatballs out of five.

Trouble:
It's fun getting into trouble! For such a simple game, this was probably the one I played the most as a kid.  Maybe it was the pop-o-matic dice roller - which meant you never had to run around looking for one.

Love this game - it get's five pop-o-matics out of five!

Perfection:

My final pick is Perfection. What it SHOULD be called is "Scare the Sh*t Out of Your Kid" because that's what it did to me! Even if I prepared myself for the "pop" I would still jump out of my skin every time!

The game first came out in the 1970s - the point being to stick 25 pieces into their appropriate slots in 60 seconds. This is hard for a little kid to do when they are frozen with fear.

This game gets a big FU*K OFF and stop scaring children!

So that's just my short list of board games. There are tons more and I want to know your what your favourites were!

That's all for now!

My parents got me Mousetrap and my sister Operation... I honestly don't remember much about the game-portion of Mousetrap, but setting up that mouse trap and making it go off was a lot of fun. As for Operation, it was good fun until all the little organ and bones you had to remove went missing. I wonder if Dexter played this one as a kid?

Game of Life was a fun one... took a long time to play though! Kerplunk was great too. Never played Risk, but it reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Bart breaks his leg! And Scott, did your cousin ever get that date? :)

Dani, one of my cousins is in that Dream Phone commercial. She lives out of country now, so I had to send her the link to your blog. We both had a giggle. Thanks!!

Well I am a girl and I loved RISK! Anyone ever play "The game of Life"? You travel along through life from high school graduation to retirement...go to college, get a job, buy a house, get married, have kids, buy insurance....wtf would you want to play that game?? LOL

My sister and I used to play Mickey's Playground all the time. Roll Dice. Move around board. Answer questions about simple trivia aimed at 4-7 year olds... I played until I was at least 12. Damn I got better every year!

haha I actually own The Squirrel Game and remember playing the hell out of it. Whenever I have friends over in the basement everyone always asks "What the F is The Squirrel Game?" I was finding little pinecones under the couch for years.

I had dream phone as a kid- and I'll be honest, it gets old and boring fast! I think it may have scarred me for life as I feel the same about guys I date.Once the butterflies are gone, its a pretty boring routine. I loved Candy Land though!

My brother and I used to play The Last Spike all the time when we were kids. It is kind of like Monopoly but you have to build a railway across Canada. I also didn't know anyone else that had it, and I ended up finding another copy on ebay a few years ago http://images.boardgamegeek.com/images/pic346583_md.jpg
