Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer frontman Maynard James Keenan told a Portland, Oregon radio station in a new interview that music piracy is stifling creativity among musicians. According to Loudwire, Keenan told KFLY that artists are less willing to spend money on making music because they know that they're not going to make that money back in record sales anymore.
Keenan explained, "Until somebody has actually written a check to record their own record and see everything that goes into it, they don't really understand. The current state of music, I'm sure there's a lot of creative stuff going on out there, but there certainly isn't. Of course, I'm being nostalgic, but it doesn't seem like there's as much, creatively, going on, 'cause most people can't afford to do it."
Keenan has been vocal for years about his dislike for illegal downloading of music, saying that technology has fostered a sense of "entitlement" that has led fans to believe that everything should be free.
The singer elaborated, "Our society has gotten to the point where just you click a button, you get what you want when you want it. So until we get to a point where we realize you don't necessarily always get what you want when you want it, we're gonna have a problem."
Keenan is on the road now with Puscifer in support of their second album, Conditions Of My Parole. The tour pulls into San Francisco on Friday night (March 16th) before winding down on Sunday (March 18) in Escondido, California.
Tool went on a short tour earlier this year, but there's still no word on when the band will record and release a follow-up to 2006's 10,000 Days.
