Gotye admitted in an interview with Australia's Courier-Mail that he was not too happy with the recent version of his monster hit, "Somebody That I Used To Know," that was done for the high school musical TV series Glee. Gotye, who is Australian himself, told the paper, "They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals, but the vocals were that pop Gleestyle, ultra dry, sounded pretty tuned, and the rock has no real sense, like it's playing to you from a cardboard box."
The Glee rendition gave the song a big boost on its way to the top of the Modern Rock chart, where it still sits this week. The track also topped the Billboard Hot 100 last week.
Gotye said about the tune's success. "I wrote the song and everything else has been a series of surprises."
Covers of "Somebody" have been popping up everywhere, not just on Glee, but Gotye admitted to tuning most of them out. He explained, "It gets to a point where it starts to feel a bit self-conscious, and I don't want to hear any more people doing something with this."
"Somebody" is taken from Gotye's third studio album, Making Mirrors, which was released last August.
Gotye, whose real name is Wouter De Backer, just finished a North American tour with an appearance at the Coachella Festival and will now head home to Australia.
