10/22/2009 2009 CASBY AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED 102.1 The Edge Fans Choose the Best in Canadian Rock After months of fan voting, the winners in four categories were announced tonight at 102.1 the Edge’s annual CASBY Music Awards, live at the Kool Haus in downtown Toronto. The 2009 CASBY Award winners are: NXNE Favourite New Indie Release: Fantasies - Metric Favourite New Artist: Arkells Favourite New Album: Fantasies - Metric Favourite New Single: Sleeping Sickness - City & Colour Headlined by Canadian indie rock band Metric, the CASBYs were handed out during a two-hour, standing-room-only concert and ceremony that also featured performances from The Stills, Arkells, Mother Mother, Matt Good, illScarlett and Jay Malinowski of Bedouin Soundclash. This year’s CASBY Award winners join the ranks of other CASBY-winning legends of Canadian rock such as Alexisonfire, Arcade Fire, Sam Roberts, Sum 41, The Tragically Hip, The Pursuit of Happiness, Barenaked Ladies and many others. Through initiatives like the CASBYs, as well as Edgefest and Bookie’s Nu Music Night, 102.1 the Edge has earned a reputation as a major force in Canadian talent development, contributing to the commercial breakthrough of some of Canada’s most influential artists, including the Barenaked Ladies, Sum 41, The Tragically Hip and Bedouin Soundclash. The CASBY Music Awards began in 1981 as an alternative to the Juno Awards and were originally called the U-Knows. Unlike many awards shows, CASBY winners are chosen entirely by the fans.
