Since their debut LP Crazy For You became my record of the year for 2010,I’ve been anticipating what Best Coast‘s next album would sound like. Then a funny thing happened—by following openly honest singer/songwriter Bethany Cosentino on Twitter, fans got to know her in a way that’s more personal and intimate than a new record could ever be. However, emotions can’t always be communicated in 140 characters and, on the band’s new record The Only Place (out this week), Cosentino doesn’t so much share her current five Ws as think out loud about her dreams and fears. Abetted by the poignant yet subtle sounds of multi-instumentalist Bob Bruno, The Only Place is a perfect musical companion for times when a little personal reflection is needed to comfirm what you already know. Best Coast play the Phoenix July 21.

For fans of inspired, earnest rock ‘n’ roll the upcoming two-night stand at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre featuring the Joel Plaskett Emergency and Frank Turner can’t come soon enough. Tickets for the shows—happening May 18 and 19—are down to the shorts straws, and for good reason. Plaskett’s new album, Scrappy Happiness, is his most satisfying in a while and Turner has become a modern-day town crier with guitar. Last month, he played Wembley Areana in London and was bestowed the ultimate honour of having Billy Bragg open the evening.
Speaking of Bragg, he’s headed our way for a couple of festival dates in July. On July 4, he’s in Ottawa for Bluesfest and then hits the Toronto area for set at this year’s Mariposa Festival July 6- 8 in Orillia. And fans of Bragg’s and Wilco‘s Woody Guthrie project Mermaid Avenue, listen up: A new package, Mermaid Avenue: The ...
Don't Fear Fun

The drummer-turned-frontman discussion just got a lot more interesting. J Tillman, former stickman for the Fleet Foxes, released solo records during his tenure with the band, but nothing hinted at what he’s served up for his new record. Under the name Father John Misty, Tillman has released Fear Fun. Self described as “modern American popular song,” it’s as elaborate, sprawling, and raw yet elegant a collection as we’ve hard this year, and the perfect complement to his former mates’ recordings. And along with the music are packaging and line-note musings that make the physical copy a must-own. Tillman brings Father John to town next Monday at the Horseshoe.
