Metric @ ACC - Nov. 24, 2012 Review and Photos by: Mark Booth In a weekend celebrating everything Canadian during the Grey Cup Festival, Metric returned home to Toronto to perform at the ACC. Though this concert wasn’t part of the Festival, an estimated 10,000 fans were ready to cheer them on. But was this enough for Metric or did they fail to measure up to stadium love. Metric’s stage setup was simple but effective. There were no video screens to project the bands images or video montages. Typically I enjoy this because it brings my focus to the band, but for those in the back rows of the upper bowl, I’m sure a projected video of the performance would have been appreciated. In lieu of the screens there were 3 light towers that provided a spectrum of lights and even a digital clock countdown (more on that later). Finally there was the setup of the band itself. Drummer Joules Scott-Key was located in the back-centre and buried behind his drum kit. In front from left to right we had guitarist Jimmy Shaw, Emily Haines as lead vocalist and keyboards, and John Winstead on bass. Throughout the performance both Shaw and Winstead stayed in their respective corners as Haines mingled between the two while controlling centre stage. Emily Haines came out on stage wearing a leather jacket with a 12 inch fringe hanging off the arms and across the back. If the bouncing fringe didn’t capture your eye as she danced, skipped and strutted across the stage, her short gold mini-skirt and luscious long legs did. But Haines is more than just a sex symbol, she has a voice and was there to be heard. The band opened with Artificial Nocturne, Youth Without Youth, Speed the Collapse, and Dreams So Real – all off their new album Synthetica. As one song ended the next one immediately began...it was very much like listening to your iPod on shuffle. Next they played Satellite Mind from Fantasies and then Lost Kitten another track off the latest album. By now we are 6 songs into the show and there has been no chatter/interaction from the band to the audience. Not even a simple “Hello TORONTO”. As I looked around the arena the audience was losing its enthusiasm. And this is where Metric was falling short. Performances of Empty, Help I’m Alive, and Dead Disco brought some fans back to their feet and revitalized the mood. Stadium Love was the final song of the regular set. Upon its completion the cubed lighting system started a digital countdown from 1:59 as the stagehands made adjustments for the final set. Ironically the clock froze at 46 seconds and after about a minute of technical delays, Haines (backstage) continued the countdown from 40 seconds to 0 over a microphone before returning on stage for the encore. The encore in my opinion was their best performance. They opened with Black Sheep which was not a “crowd favourite”, but the next song was Monster Hospital. This had the entire arena on its feet, dancing and singing along. When the song ended – Haines took a few minutes to talk to the crowd about the origins of the song, her political activism in high school with fellow classmate/musician Amy Millan and them appearing on the cover of the Toronto Star. This really was her first real interaction with audience for the night. Next was Gold Guns Girls which in my opinion was the best performance of the night. At the end of the song Haines spoke of meeting a fan prior to the show who lost her sibling to cancer. What followed was a couple minute of rambling about everyone experiencing the loss of someone and it felt very awkward and anti-climactic. Though I sympathized with the message by this point I wasn’t interested in what she had to say. The concert closed with an acoustic version of Gimme Sympathy by Haines and Shaw. Before I wrote this review I discussed the shows performance with a friend who attended the same concert earlier in the week in London, Ontario. He said their performance was very much the same there as I had witnessed – all music and no chatter. Metric has the musical repertoire to put on a solid performance, but they need to learn that interaction is just as important as a set list. If you can’t relate with your hometown crowd – you can’t expect to achieve Stadium Love.

Of Monsters and Men @ Kool Haus - November 16, 2012 Review and Photos by: Mark Booth (http://markbooth.zenfolio.com/) On November 15th Of Monsters and Men rolled into Toronto for the first of two sold out shows at the Kool Haus. The indie folk band from Iceland are riding high on the success of their debut album "My Head is an Animal" with the hit tracks "Little Talks" and "Mountain Sound". On this night the six member group increased its size by one adding a seventh musician who played keyboards and an accordion. This was his first live performance with them. Under a montage of blue and violet lights the band opened with Dirty Paws. Most of the night their stage presence was very static as they stayed in their set positions and didn't venture around the stage. But their sound was rich - they sounded as good live as they do on the CD. There was full house singalongs during their performance of "Little Talks", "From Finner" and "Mountain Sound". If I was to report anything negative about the show it would be that it was finished within 70 minutes. But they are a new band and so the set list is limited. Overall Of Monsters and Men gave a solid performance and if you get a chance to see them you won't be disappointed.

Stone Temple Pilots @ Copps Coliseum - August 23, 2012 Review and Photos by: Mark Booth (http://markbooth.zenfolio.com/) Stone Temple Pilots are celebrating 20 years in the industry with a North American tour, and they made a stop in Hamilton at Copps Coliseum on August 21st. The alternative rock band who dominated the 90’s with albums like Core, Purple, Tiny Music…Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop and No. 4 was back and ready to prove that they still have what it takes. STP is fronted by vocalist Scott Weiland, brothers Dean & Rob DeLeo on guitar and bass, and Erik Kretz on drums. Their format was very simplistic… there was the standard overhead lighting, some fog machines, a canvass backdrop and 4 guys evenly spaced on the stage. They didn’t use lasers, movie projections or pyrotechnics. The only thing flashy on stage was Weiland’s three piece suit and his swagger as he strutted across the stage. But their style worked because now the fan could focus on their music and that’s just what we did. It would have been easy to perform for 90 minutes as just a retro recall session. But the band kept the set list open with more recent songs like Between the Lines and Hickory Dichotomy, less common tracks Silvergun Superman and Black Again as well as classics like Sin, Interstate Love Song, Big Empty and Plush. The evening ended with Weiland bringing a fan who’s seat was front and centre up on stage. The fan (Angie) had been holding a sign all night that stated “bring me up on stage to sing Dead & Bloated”. It turned out she had done this at a previous concert on the tour, but she was now in her hometown of Hamilton and welcomed the band to her city. Weiland gave her the megaphone he’d used throughout the night, and with conviction Angie sang the first two lines of the song. Finishing the show Weiland said “Thank you for coming out. You’ve been great. We’ve been STP!”

After seven years from the spotlight, Garbage returned to the stage for a sold out performance at the Phoenix Concert Theatre, and a deafening crowd was there to greet them. On more than one occasion Shirley Manson addressed the audience “Toronto, you are f---ing crazy. You are f---ing loud.” Which drew more chants and cheers from the crowd. Garbage is made up of guitarists Duke Erikson and Steve Marker, drummer Butch Vig and fronted by Shirley Manson (the original Queen of Goth). During this tour they’ve added bassist Eric Avery (formerly from Jane’s Addiction) to the stage. The alternative electro-rock band just released their 5th studio album “Not Your Kind of People” this month. During the 110 minute show the band performed their classic hits like “Stupid Girl”, “Special”, “I think I’m Paranoid”, “Only Happy when it Rains” and “Push It”. They also performed “Blood for Poppies” and “Man on a Wire” off their new album. About halfway into the show the band experienced technical difficulties and had to reboot their monitors. Manson used this 5 minute disruption to interact with the crowd and enjoy a wee dram of whiskey. Manson asked several concert goers their names and where they were from. She even commented that she recognized a few of them from earlier in the afternoon when they performed at the Sugar Beach Edge Session. One gentlemen from about the middle of the crowd was hoisted up and slowly crowd surfed closer to the stage. He shouted out “Shirley I love you!” – to which Manson responded “I love you too dear” to the roar of the crowd. Manson proved she is still one of rock’s best frontwomen – displaying confidence, conviction, and her own style of sexiness from the stage. The band’s name may be Garbage, but their performance was anything but. As a fan one can only hope we don’t have to wait another seven years to see them again. Death Cab For Cutie @ Massey Hall - April 19, 2012

Death Cab for Cutie rolled into Toronto on Thursday for a performance at Massey Hall. Accompanied with the Magik Magik Orchestra (who is featured on their current album Code and Keys) the band chose a wide spectrum of their work for a set list. Under a backlit stage of blue flood lights lead signer Ben Gibbard and the rest of the group casually played their tunes as the octet enhanced the sounds with the strings of violins and chellos. This was not your typical rock performance with flashing strobes and heavy drum beats. Like the performers on the stage, the audience was very static throughout most of the show. There was very little head-bobbing, no one was out of their seats and up against the stage until the final encore, and the only time I witnessed anyone dancing (8 people) was when Soul Meets Body was performed. For a band like Death Cab for Cutie, the marrying of their music with an orchestra worked, but for me this was a performance better suited for the likes of Roy Thompson Hall than Massey Hall. Snow Patrol rocks the audience with harmony and rapport at Massey Hall on Tuesday night. Seven band mates fronted by lead signer Gary Lightbody performed a collection of past hits and songs from their latest album Fallen Empires. The stage setup was simplistic yet effective with a number of spotlights projecting from the floor skyward. But it was Gary’s connection with the audience that personalized their performance. At the start of the second song Take Back the City he stopped the music and requested the audience to stand up. “Feel free to stand up, its totally fine with me.” When the crowd rose – the band started again and Gary said “see it's simple you stand and the music plays”. At the end of the song "Run" Gary light-heartedly addressed a concert-goer at centre stage who stood expressionless throughout the song. He asked him if he was having a good time and “if you’re happy, then tell your face”. This brought cheers from the crowd. His playful banter continued when he requested a karaoke sing-a-long for the chorus "Shut your Eyes". He extended this audience participation by breaking the performance down to Ladies Only, then Men Only, Ladies Only, etc. After several repetitions he joked with the crowd we could do this for another 30 minutes. At the close of the song he thanked the crowd and rewarded them by dedicating the next song to them…"Chasing Cars". Ed Sheeran (opening act) joined the band on-stage to perform New York, drawing a large cheer from much of the female audience. But for me my favourite song performance was "Fallen Empires". It was crisp, clean and almost militant like. During the encore, Gary swooned the crowd one last time shaking hands with several concert goers around the stage before stepping off the stage and performing in the centre aisle (as well as posing for a few photos). One last kudos has to go out to the staff and security working at Massey Hall. They were professional, but kept the vibe upbeat. I watched as ushers went through the aisles and located junior audience members (young teens) sitting in the floors. They brought them up to the front where security gave them a wristband that allowed them to enjoy the show pressed up against the stage, now only a few feet from the band. What a cool experience. I would say by the end of the concert everyone left genuinely happy – even the guy at centre stage - and their faces knew it. A good time was had by all. Our Lady Peace @ Phoenix Concert Theatre

On April 3rd, Our Lady Peace took to the stage at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in celebration of their eight album release; Curve. The venue was filled to capacity with concert goers. Opening with Allowance (the first track off the new album), the band performed to a montage of fog, flashing lights and video images projected on the white screens behind them. OLP performed 5 songs off their new album as well as some of their most popular hits. Raine Maida used all of his vocal talents to bring cheers from the audience claiming “this is the loudest crowd we’ve heard on this tour to date.” Jeremy Taggart performed a 2 minute drum solo before being joined by his band mates to perform Find Our Way. The show ended with a karaoke sing-along of 4AM. Overall OLP gave a stellar performance. As fans gain more exposure to this new album they will not be disappointed with this tour. Gotye, Kimbra @ Kool Haus

March 31, 2012 Review by: Katherine Harper. “You’ve been ace Toronto”. Trust me Gotye the feeling is completely mutual. From the minute the show opened with Eyes Wide Open I was enthralled. The ginormous video screen filled with incredible images of sunrises. The sound was perfectly tuned and the energy coming from each of the performers was palpable. Gotye was supported by a talented group of musicians. I love going to a show where the people performing are so very obviously having a great time on stage. Guitars, drums, samplers, percussion were elevated in each song with video elements. The animations ranged from landscapes to anime to abstract. (If you’re keen to know more about them you can find them on his YouTube channel - http://www.youtube.com/user/gotyemusic - I’m particularly partial to State of the Art) A pet peeve of mine in this modern day and age of concert going is the people who don’t seem able to stop taking pictures or video of the show and actually just enjoy the live performance – and apparently this feeling is also shared by Gotye as evidenced by his comments before performing his number one hit Somebody that I Used to Know. Use the power of memory he said to remember – it’s much more vivid those lo fi videos and blurry pictures. He’s so very right. Kimbra, who opened strongly for Gotye, came out to perform her solo and blew everyone away with her incredible voice, dancing – and fantastic dress! The encore started with Bronte – a beautiful delicate number – for which Gotye requested that the audience be quiet. The request was mainly adhered to but I did feel awful for the chatterboxes and the ‘whump whump’ of the bass from Guvernment that had already started up and distracted from the delicate notes of the xylophone. At the end of the number Gotye asked those whose hadn’t stopped talking to just “ leave now” and rewarded/dedicated the final two numbers to those who had shown the music the appropriate respect by listening. My Chemical Romance played The Edge 102.1's Jingle Bell Rock series closing it out for another season, and they couldn’t have picked a better band to go out with a bang. The concert sold out, which didn’t surprise me in the least because there were kids lined up outside the Sound Academy by 2:00am and by 5:00am there were a few hundred camped out for when doors opened at 7:00pm. Saying that My Chemical Romance have an enormous following would be the understatement of the year considering it’s more of a cult with fans dressing up in costume to see them perform. Leading up to their set, a bunch fights broke out and a few people needed EMT’s… probably from waiting in the cold for 17 hours then moving into a crowed 100 degree crowd… but that didn’t stop most of them getting back into the mess later on. I counted one girl get pulled out 4 times only to go right back in. Overall, probably my favourite show of 2010 not to mention my last. Everything about this band screams passion, from their lyrics to the way the perform on stage. I highly recommend you go see them when they come back to Toronto on April 19th 2011. What a way to start of Canadian Music Fest than with a killer high-energy performance by Kentucky's Cage the Elephant. With a current #1 song on the Edge's Thursday 30 ("Back Against the Wall" - March 11, 2010), the boys laid down a crazed and sweaty rock-show clinic to a sold-out Phoenix Concert Theatre. They held nothing back as they tore it up on and off stage with lead singer Matt Shultz jumping into the crowd numerous times. At one point Matt literally stood on top of the crowd while belting out lyrics on the mic... I've never seen anyone sing better while crowd-surfing! With such a high-energy act, it's no wonder their set only lasted an hour. Known for their unpredictable antics, Cage the Elephant ended off their encore with Matt body-surfing to the back of the room and climbing up to the upper balcony. The fans were going mental...
